Practice and Repetition

Practice and Repetition - Today's tasks

Thanks to the sophisticated algorithm within Dejavu English, every word or phrase you add to your notebook is carefully monitored. With this algorithm, it reminds you at certain intervals based on each word's learning rating status. This way, it helps you transfer words from your short-term memory to your permanent long-term memory.

Vocabulary acquisition in a language is reinforced through repetition and practice. Aware of this fact, Dejavu English supports the process of repetition and practice with highly sophisticated tools. These tools make your learning experience multifaceted and allow you to effectively expand your vocabulary.

SRS — Spaced Repetition System

Fluent Forever Book

Dejavu English uses the Spaced Repetition System (SRS) — the same method described in the Fluent Forever book — to move vocabulary into your long-term memory.

How SRS works:

The human brain loses information according to the forgetting curve: we forget newly learned things quickly.

SRS reverses this curve by making you review information just before you forget it.

Each review interval grows progressively longer:

  • 1st review → minutes/hours later
  • 2nd review → 1 day later
  • 3rd review → 3–4 days later
  • Later reviews → 1 week, 1 month, 3 months…

SRS in Dejavu English:

Based on the SRS value of words in your notebook, Dejavu English selects 5 or 10 words as your daily mandatory review.

Important: If you don't complete a review session, those same words carry over to the next day. They stay as tasks until practice is finished.

Practice Methods

Dejavu English offers multiple practice methods to reinforce words from different angles. Each method targets a different dimension of learning — used together, they maximize retention.

Word Practice Methods:

  • Flashcard: A classic but highly effective method. See one side of a word card, recall its meaning, then flip it to check. Perfect for fast review.
  • Multiple Choice: Find the correct meaning or translation for a given word from four options. Strengthens active recall.
  • Listen and Write: Hear the word spoken aloud, then type the correct spelling. Develops both listening comprehension and spelling at the same time.
  • Contextual Paragraph: Read an original paragraph written around your target word. See exactly how it's used in a realistic context.
  • Pronunciation Practice: Say the word aloud and let the app evaluate your pronunciation. An essential tool for building speaking confidence.

Phrase Practice Methods:

  • Phrase Flashcard: Review your saved phrasal verbs and expressions using the flashcard method.
  • Phrase Listen and Write: Hear a phrase spoken aloud and type it correctly. Combines listening and writing skills for lasting retention.
  • Phrase Multiple Choice: Match a given phrase or definition to the correct answer.

Daily Task System:

Each day, Dejavu English automatically selects the words with the lowest SRS score — those most urgently needing review — and presents them as your daily tasks. Completing these tasks keeps your vocabulary fresh, active, and moving steadily into long-term memory.

From your dashboard you can track daily review tasks, weekly learning statistics, and overall progress charts at a glance.
